The Bigger Picture
Mesh radio technologies like Meshtastic, MeshCore, and Reticulum solve a critical piece of the decentralization puzzle: communication without infrastructure. But the vision of a truly decentralized stack extends beyond radio. Two technologies in particular complement mesh networking: IPFS and Nostr.
IPFS: The InterPlanetary File System
IPFS is a peer-to-peer protocol for storing and sharing data in a distributed file system.
How IPFS Works
- Content Addressing: Instead of location-based addresses (like URLs), IPFS uses content-based addresses called CIDs (Content Identifiers). The address of a file IS its cryptographic hash. If the content changes, the address changes.
- Distributed Storage: Files are split into blocks and distributed across the network. Multiple nodes can host the same content, providing redundancy and resilience.
- Peer-to-Peer: There is no central server. Nodes connect directly to exchange data.
- Deduplication: Since addresses are based on content, identical files are naturally deduplicated across the network.
Why IPFS Matters for Mesh Networks
- Content can be cached and served locally, reducing bandwidth requirements
- Files persist even if the original uploader goes offline (as long as other nodes pin the content)
- Works well with intermittent connectivity common in mesh networks
- Provides a censorship-resistant publishing layer
Nostr: Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays
Nostr is a simple, open protocol for decentralized social networking and messaging.
How Nostr Works
- Cryptographic Identity: Your identity is a key pair. Your public key IS your account; no registration needed.
- Signed Events: Every post, message, or action is a signed JSON event. Forgery is impossible.
- Relay Architecture: Events are published to relays (simple servers). Clients can connect to multiple relays for redundancy.
- Client Choice: Any Nostr client can connect to any relay. There is no lock-in to a specific app or platform.
Key Properties
- Censorship Resistant: If one relay blocks you, publish to another. No single entity controls the network.
- Portable Identity: Your account is your key pair. Switch clients freely without losing your identity or followers.
- Interoperable: The simple protocol allows a rich ecosystem of clients for different use cases (social media, long-form writing, messaging, marketplaces).
The Decentralized Stack
Combining these technologies creates a powerful stack:
| Layer | Technology | Purpose |
|-------|-----------|---------|
| Radio Transport | Meshtastic / MeshCore / Reticulum | Off-grid communication |
| Data Storage | IPFS | Distributed file storage |
| Social / Messaging | Nostr | Decentralized social interaction |
| Cryptography | Built into each layer | Privacy and authenticity |
Looking Ahead
The convergence of mesh networking, distributed storage, and decentralized social protocols points toward a future where individuals and communities can communicate, share data, and organize without dependence on centralized infrastructure. Each technology addresses a different layer of the stack, and together they form a resilient, sovereign communications platform.
